statement:
I have a long-standing interest in the meeting point of two approaches to making things exist in the world. The two approaches can be summarized in the two words “craft” and “design”. Craft can describe a way of acting directly on material - shaping and transforming it by a logic born directly from the physical engagements of eyes, body, tools, and matter. Design, which relates to the word for ‘drawing’ in other latin languages, can describe an approach whereby an idea or concept can exist independently of its material, and whose eventual materialization cannot happen without an intermediate action of translation, be it through drawing, modeling or other representations or instructions. These two opposite yet related approaches - one direct and one indirect - not only account for all that has ever been built, but can lead to interesting possibilities for new spaces, objects, and structures.
